Save our koalas

31 donors have given to Save our koalas raising $1,482.

The devastating bushfires over the past year were estimated to have killed or displaced nearly three billion animals.

Saving our native species requires quick and decisive action to prevent further decline of populations and habitat. QUT is using drones and artificial intelligence (AI) to support wildlife recovery over bushfire affected areas.

Improving wildlife recovery methods

With many of our native wildlife becoming extinct at alarming rates, QUT researchers have developed a leading-edge technique for detecting koalas using drones that can detect heat signatures from above – a faster and more accurate method than traditional ground searches. They have created an algorithm to identify the heat signatures of koalas and are working to extend their algorithm to automatically detect other animal species.

Your gift will help:

  • enable detection, analysis and mapping of koalas from drone data in bushfire affected areas
  • develop an algorithm to increase the number of species able to be detected
  • support drone surveys in partnership with national wildlife protection organisations
  • improve wildlife populations and the sustainability of large areas of wilderness.

The real-world impact of your gift

Your gift will go towards improved monitoring to assist with wildlife recovery and inform effective conservation decisions.

  • $1,000 would enable 10 hours of expert support for algorithm development to increase number of species able to be detected
  • $10,000 would provide staffing and equipment for one field trip to a site to survey and analyse a koala population
  • $30,000 would allow us to buy a new drone and sensor to be used to find wildlife after bushfires
